Why this petition matters

Started by Julian Saunders

Sandwell Council has been placed into "special measures" by the Dep't of Levelling-Up due to a range of serious problems. It currently has 24 wards with 3 councillors per ward. In recent times Sandwell taxpayers and residents have also become subject to the costs of an extra tier of local government via the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).

Not only are 72 councillors claiming members' allowances but a majority also receive "special responsibility payments" from the taxpayer. At every recent full Council meeting there have been many absentees.

Sandwell has massive problems of poverty and deprivation and cannot afford 72 councillors plus the WMCA.

Having three ward councillors is costly and provides no discernible benefit to local residents. If you live in Sandwell please sign this petition for a leaner and more efficient Council.
