The Issue

All my life, I've worked hard and always been poor. Now, I am a parent to two little girls, and it feels like I'm stuck in the same cycle of struggle my mother and grandparents were in. It should not be this way. In Sparta, TN, many families, including mine, find it impossible to get ahead despite earning two or three incomes. Yet, we remain unable to stay afloat let alone feel secure for the future.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the cost of living in Sparta, especially rent and electricity, has skyrocketed, leaving families financially strapped. Our community members are being forced to work long hours, often requiring four or more people to contribute in a household just to keep up. This isn't just about money; it's about the human cost - parents missing time with their children, increased stress, deteriorating family relationships, and a diminished quality of life.

The relentless increase in living expenses makes it look like we are working tirelessly only to line the pockets of those at the top, perpetuating a system that keeps the rich wealthy at the expense of the rest. But what happens when this system collapses under its own weight? It's the wealthy who will have to pay the price when society can no longer cope with constant struggle and inequality.

Concrete solutions exist. Local government needs to implement rent control measures to cap how much landlords can charge. Additionally, pushing for subsidies or tax breaks for those who can least afford their electricity bills could offer immediate relief. There's also a need for proactive measures in attracting job opportunities that provide fair wages to sustain families on a single income.

A town where one income can sustain a decent life is not just a dream. It’s a necessity for the future prosperity of our community in Sparta, TN. Every family deserves stability and a chance to thrive without being buried under overwhelming financial burdens.

Join me in urging local lawmakers and decision-makers to address these pressing issues. Stand with us by signing this petition to make rent and electricity affordable once more, allowing all families to live with dignity in Sparta, TN. Together, our voices can inspire change and create a more equitable community for everyone.
