Reduce Ocean Acidification

Reduce Ocean Acidification

The Issue

As humans utilize more fossil fuels with the burning of coal, oil, gas, and petroleum for energy, it’s no doubt that the carbon dioxide concentration levels in the atmosphere have sky-rocket. Ocean acidification erupts from the mixing of the ocean waters and the carbon dioxide in the air: the more wind and turbulence within the waters, the more carbon dioxide gets mixed in with the waters.

It’s important that we start educating ourselves on the problematic consequences of too many fossil fuels becoming present in our atmosphere as it affects not only the oceans and the organisms living within it but us, humans, as well. Oceans are heating up, minerals used by marine creatures are being eaten away, and harmful algal species that produce toxins are growing at a faster rate; This can eventually harm people by consuming contaminated shellfish and other sickened marine animals.

Now although it is impossible to stop the production of fossil fuels completely, it is still possible to decrease the amount of fossil fuels we use on a daily. And with this petition, passing it through the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), an agency that serves to protect human health and the environment, we could possibly make it a mandate to get rid of all "carbon dioxide emitting" machinery (to an extent) in the near future.

For instance, investing in an electrical car and replacing gas cars, investing in an electric stove to replace your gas stove, or using eco-friendly cosmetics. While it may seem expensive when investing in these new appliances, it’s long-term benefits to our health and the world around us definitely outweigh the financial cons of this change. Overall, with the reduction of the amount of fossil fuel-ran appliances and products, we may be able to reduce ocean acidification in the future, restoring the health of our planet.
