The Issue

For students living in the hostel, unexpected delays can happen for a variety of genuine reasons. However, the current penalty of ₹500 for a late attendance entry places a considerable financial and emotional burden on students, particularly when the delay is occasional and does not reflect a repeated disregard for hostel regulations.

Students already manage academic responsibilities, assignments, examinations, personal commitments, and other aspects of college life. A single instance of arriving late can sometimes be unavoidable, and imposing a substantial fine immediately can feel disproportionate to the situation.

We understand the importance of maintaining discipline and ensuring that hostel timings are followed. However, the existing system could be made more balanced by introducing a warning for a first-time occurrence or providing students with an opportunity to explain genuine circumstances before a monetary penalty is imposed.

A more flexible approach could maintain accountability while avoiding unnecessary financial pressure on students and their families. A system based on warnings, reasonable grace periods, or an appeal process could also help distinguish between repeated violations and isolated incidents.

We request the hostel administration and concerned authorities to reconsider the current ₹500 penalty and explore a system that combines discipline with fairness. The purpose of a hostel rule should be to encourage responsible behaviour while also recognising the practical challenges students may occasionally face.

By supporting this petition, we are asking for a more reasonable and transparent approach to late attendance penalties. We believe students should be held accountable for their actions, but the consequences should also be proportionate, considerate, and fair.
