The issue

Fireworks have long been a source of distress and harm, not only to our pets but also to our families and communities. In our own home, they are the root cause of intense panic and anxiety on our beloved pets. The unpredictable noise and bright light can set them into a frenzy, causing significant disruption to our household. Additionally, our neighbours are affected too, with young children startled awake by the loud explosions.

Beyond the immediate distress, fireworks present a serious environmental concern. The risk of wildfires is significantly heightened by fireworks, leading to larger emissions of carbon dioxide, a major contributor to climate change. Statistics reveal that fireworks are a substantial factor in degrading air quality and inserting atmospheric pollutants that damage ecosystems. The remnants of fireworks introduce microplastics and harmful chemicals into our local soil and water, posing a threat to wildlife and human health alike.

Fireworks can be wonderful to watch, but the cost to our environment, health, and wellbeing is too great. It's time New Zealand takes action on these harms by eliminating the use of private retail fireworks. Such a policy change would not only protect our loved ones, pets, and natural environment but also align with global efforts to combat climate change and pollution.

This policy will significantly reduce the risk of accidents and environmental damage, minimising their large negative impacts. Please sign this petition to urge the New Zealand government to make this crucial change for the safety of our animals, people, property, and the environment.
