Reduce Great White Shark numbers along our coastline. More needs to be done
The issue
Reduce great white shark numbers along our coastline close to shore. Australia has a Great White Shark problem that we shouldn’t have to accept.
Too many attacks are happening resulting in the victims bleeding out on the beach and the shark that attacked does not get hunted and destroyed. Great white and human interactions are happening daily where it used to be unheard of. Great white life is being put above human life and well being.
Surfers and divers are on edge, second guessing wether it’s a good idea to let their children become addicted to the ocean. Northern NSW used to be a warm water paradise not associated with whites, now it’s a great white hot spot. South Australia along with many attacks is where they shot the movie Jaws, Southern NSW & Victoria are having more encounters, Western Australia has suffered many horrific attacks, QLD has more than it’s fair share, Tasmania a kid was recently pulled off a boat by a white. Australia has a shark problem.
If a inquisitive white (tiger or bull) is known to be hanging around an area near humans it should be caught and dragged out to sea. If it has bitten, bumped or circled a human then it should be hunted and destroyed. Introduce a calculated cull, not to wipe out the species but to reduce numbers so we don’t have so many whites patrolling our beaches.
Whites should not be on the protected species list, allow them to be fished. Ban cage diving to stop whites associating human with food. Ban close to shore fish farming, the constant burley up of the fish farms attracks sharks from all round.
Bond University shark scientist admits white numbers weren’t known when they were put on the protection list, so counting them now will not give them the hard evidence needed to confirm white populations have increased. Scientists ignore fisherman, surfers and divers who are in / on the water everyday encountering more whites now than ever before. It is clear that the white population has boomed since it’s been protected. Current shark mitigation strategy is not enough. Smart drum lines have been removed from many areas highly frequented by whites. Scientists should be coming up with ways to keep whites away from our beaches and stay out to sea.
Don’t let Australia become like Reunion Island. Where locals are not allowed to enter the ocean and their well being is suffering. Youth are turning to drugs without access to ocean therapy.
We cull kangaroos when they are a pest to farmers. We culled crocodiles when the numbers got to high. Why not reduce the booming Great White Shark population because they are attacking humans? Allow ocean mammals to become the top predators on the coastline in turn making it safer for surfers, divers, nippers, bathers and beach goers. Allow shark species that are less threatening to humans pick off the sick and injured fish.
Make places like Northern NSW and Margaret river safer holiday destinations for families, not somewhere we’d rather keep our kids out of the water.
We are an island nation and with many of us that are connected to the ocean, the pool cannot replace that. There has always been and will always be a risk when entering the ocean, but the risk is far greater now than ever before. The ocean is where white sharks live but we have allowed their population to boom by protecting them for to long, so now we need to control it. Shark finning and over fishing is wrong, we shouldn’t rape the rest of the ocean and at the same time provide a safe haven for whites on our beaches.
