Reduce excessive homework in schools
The Issue
My name is Lyca, and as a senior high school in Araceli National Highschool, I often find myself overwhelmed by the sheer volume of homework I am assigned daily. It leaves me stressed, sleep-deprived, and without any time for hobbies, relaxation, or even essential family time. Many of my peers share this sentiment, and it's time to address the impact excessive homework has on students’ wellbeing and learning.
Studies have shown that students thrive when they have a balanced life, which includes time for play, extracurricular activities, and rest. According to Stanford University, over 56% of students consider homework a primary source of stress, and only 1% said it was not a stressor. This unhealthy level of stress can lead to more serious mental health issues including anxiety and depression.
Countries with high-ranking education systems, like Finland, give minimal homework yet achieve excellent results. They focus on quality rather than quantity, encouraging active learning and critical thinking during school hours instead of extended hours of homework.
I urge educational authorities, school boards, and teachers in San Francisco and the broader United States to reevaluate and reform homework policies. By implementing a cap on the amount of homework given, setting clear educational goals, and encouraging more interactive and in-depth classroom learning, we can significantly improve the health, happiness, and academic performance of students.
Join me in requesting our school district to adopt a more sustainable and enlightened approach to learning. Sign the petition to reduce excessive homework and advocate for healthier, happier, and more balanced school lives for all students.
