As an individual deeply concerned about energy conservation, I am alarmed by the unnecessary waste of electricity caused by YouTube's default Dark Mode Ambient setting. This feature, which is automatically activated on every capable machine (and sometimes even on slower ones) running YouTube in Dark mode, significantly increases power consumption.

This feature of the YouTube player active when running YouTube in dark mode wastes our machines CPU power and costly electricity, but most of all: It's causing tons of extra CO2 being pumped into the atmosphere just because of a graphical effect few notice (or truly need).

Considering that there are tens or hundreds of millions of machines worldwide using this setting, the total energy wasted is staggering - potentially reaching into Terawatts.

The International Energy Agency reports that data centers worldwide consumed about 200 Terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2018 - roughly 1% of all global electricity use (source: IEA). This is just the data centers alone.

If we then consider that the users running desktops and laptops far outweigh the power being drawn by data centers by multiple factors, then the amount of of power being unnecessarily wasted due to a default setting of YouTube's video player becomes self-evident.

It's not just about the numbers and our own wallets; it's also about our responsibility towards our planet. With climate change becoming an increasingly pressing issue and energy conservation a critical part of addressing it, such features should never be enabled by default.

We call upon YouTube to take immediate action in disabling their Dark Mode Ambient mode as a default setting. It may seem like a small step but remember - every bit counts when it comes to saving our planet.
