The Issue

Every weekday, when we finally return home from a long day at work, we find ourselves facing an unfair financial burden imposed by peak hour electricity charges. Living in Colorado, where the cost of electricity spikes notably during these essential evening hours, has become increasingly difficult. For many families like mine, these are the only hours where we can prepare dinner, catch up with each other, and engage in our necessary daily routines. The burden becomes even more pronounced in the summertime, when children are home from school, escalating our electricity usage as air conditioning becomes a necessity. It is unacceptable that our need to simply live and function in our homes results in disproportionate charges from utility companies.

Statistics show that Colorado residents pay significantly higher electricity rates during peak hours, putting an unjust financial strain on middle and low-income families across the state. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, residential electricity prices in Colorado see an average increase of about 25% during peak periods. This isn't just an inconvenience; for countless households, it's a significant economic challenge.

We urge the Colorado Public Utilities Commission and local energy providers to reconsider the current peak pricing strategy. By introducing a fairer pricing model that accounts for the realities of working families and adjusts charges to reflect real-time consumption costs, we can alleviate the economic pressure many families endure. Furthermore, investing in educational campaigns to help residents lower their electricity usage effectively would be beneficial.

Real solutions are within our reach, such as adopting time-of-use programs with more nuanced rates that offer incentives for off-peak usage without penalizing peak-hour consumption unduly. Additionally, supporting infrastructure enhancements to better manage peak demand can also alleviate the strain on utility resources, promoting fair costs for everyone.

We believe in the power of collective action to bring about meaningful change. Stand with us to demand a more equitable approach to electricity pricing in Colorado. Sign this petition to support Colorado families in securing a fair energy future.
