Reduce cost of cancer treatment for the world's poorest
The Issue
I am a cancer survivor from Kenya. Going through the arduous journey of battling cancer has enlightened me to the overwhelming challenges that needy cancer patients face daily. Many lack access to proper treatment due to the prohibitive costs involved, compounded by the absence of basic necessities like food and shelter. This dire state of affairs significantly reduces the survival rate of poorer patients, with mortality rates markedly higher among the lower socioeconomic classes compared to their middle and upper-class counterparts.
Cancer does not discriminate. Yet, our current healthcare systems around the world fail to extend the necessary support to the most impoverished individuals suffering from this devastating disease. The stark contrast between survival rates among economic classes is unjust and unacceptable. We must strive for distributive justice in healthcare, ensuring that every individual, regardless of financial status, has equal access to life-saving treatments.
According to a report by the World Health Organization, cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with low and middle-income countries bearing a disproportionate burden. While advancements in medical science have drastically improved cancer survival rates in many parts of the world, these advancements remain out of reach for billions living in poverty. This is a collective failure that we can address.
One pragmatic solution is to implement globally inclusive policies that subsidize the cost of cancer treatments for low-income individuals. Governments and international organizations can collaborate to create a funding pool specifically targeted at making cancer treatment more accessible and affordable for those in desperate need. Pharmaceutical companies should also be encouraged to adopt flexible pricing strategies to lower the cost of cancer drugs in underprivileged regions.
These steps, albeit challenging, are not impossible if we work in unison. Together, we can advocate for policy changes that ensure equitable treatment for all and diminish the heartbreaking disparity in cancer care.
