Reduce Application Fees for Public Higher Education

The Issue

For students across South Africa, the dream of higher education often feels beyond reach due to prohibitive application fees. Many pupils come from backgrounds where every cent counts, and while they may qualify for government funding to cover tuition, the cost of simply applying can deter them from even trying. The high application fees create a vicious cycle, effectively blocking deserving students from pursuing the education that could change their futures.

The current system places a financial burden on families even before acceptance into a program. In many cases, an aspiring student may apply to multiple universities hoping for a single acceptance, each application costing anywhere from R100 to R550. If they are rejected, there's no refund, meaning that money is lost. Never to be invested into their personal future. That's potentially thousands of Rands just to apply!

Implementing a policy that lowers application fees and ensures a refund if an application is unsuccessful would be a monumental step forward. This change would not only broaden access to higher education but also ensure that financial constraints no longer serve as a barrier to opportunity.

We urge the South African governmental bodies and educational institutions to review and revise their application fee policies.

Please join us in calling for fairer access to higher education for all by signing this petition. Your support can help dismantle the barriers that prevent many from achieving academic and professional success.
