Left Handed children punished at school.

Many left handed children were beaten by adults at school for not writing with their right hand, causing lasting impairment.

Left or right hand, watch him compose
Tender, insightful poem or prose
But can't remember, can't recite
Caned to force him to his right.

Can't recite, so teacher vexed
Watching fearful, who is next
Left or Right hand, take your pick
Crashing down comes bamboo stick

So, teacher write a poem for me
Or compose, create a melody
Paint a portrait, sketch a scene
Yet you punish those who can, obscene

About governmental and non-governmental action
By October 2007,

17 Council of Europe member states had changed their legislation to prohibit all corporal punishment of children.

These are:
Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Sweden and Ukraine.
