NO pot stores near kids in Redmond

NO pot stores near kids in Redmond
The Issue
We love Redmond. It offers good schools and lots of family-friendly amenities. People here are friendly, loving, and have a very active lifestyle.
We do not want pot stores coming to the city we love, especially near kids, because
- Redmond is densely populated with families with kids. We want the priority of land use be schools and kids-and-family-oriented facilities, not pot stores.
- Marijuana can be poisonous to children. With its attractive packaging (cookies, candies), there is an increase in accidental ingestion among kids since legalization of marijuana in the state.
- Marijuana stores generate traffic 10x of a specialty retail store
- Marijuana stores increase the risk of driving under drug-influence. Driving incidents involving marijuana increased 122% between 2010 and 2014.
- Marijuana stores pose serious public safety threats. They could be targets for burglaries and other violent crimes. Both Denver and Seattle have seen increase in crimes since legalization of marijuana.
- Having marijuana stores in the city won’t kill the black market. Illegal transaction will still happen among teens.
- Having marijuana stores nearby provides visual cues for the under-aged so that they are more tempted to try. Worse, some retail marijuana stores in Washington even sell to minors.
- Marijuana can be addictive, and addiction is 4x higher in teens than in adults.
Just because it is legal doesn’t make it socially responsible.
