Every local here loves our local wild life and love showing it off to everyone who comes to visit. We are all for protecting our wildlife but taking away a part of a family, is taking away a basic human right. Humans need animals, it is scientifically proven.

Feeding and caring for a pet encourages childhood responsibility. Children with pets display improved impulse control, social skills and self-esteem. Sharing the love and care of a family pet forges an additional common bond among siblings. Cuddling a pet reduces stress, loneliness, depression and anxiety.

Pets can literally change the chemicals in your brain, which typically includes higher oxytocin levels that make us fall in love. At the same time, pets lower our cortisol levels, which are often linked with stress and weight gain, and our alpha-amylase levels, which are proteins linked with starch digestion in the body.

It is no secret that our island also has a dark history of death involving suicide. So, why would we take away something that science has proven to be a therapy choice for someone with mental health issues?

And if that isn't enough to convince you, let's talk money. It is seen constantly how many tourist come to this island with pets. You said yourself we are the only in Queensland that allow animals in camp grounds. Giving this island another unique tourism factor. In an island that is suffering dramatically from tourism loss and business in general regarding the mining closure. With holiday houses and air bnbs simply ruining the island; not to mention the complete lack of houses to live in at all, making long time locals flee the island due to being homeless. But, that is an issue for another day. Why take away something that tourist find so great about our island?

I don't expect the issue at hand of the native wildlife to sort out on it's own. As a proposal of ways to fix this, please see as follow:

1) Higher pound presence - to ensure pets aren't out roaming without there owners

2) Registered - do more checks to ensure all pets are registered with the council to ensure complete responsibility of the pets behaviour on the owner

3) Mandatory Desexing - all pets must be desexed unless registered to breed. To stop an influx in unwanted breeding and therefore unwanted pets.

This issue is one the community will not take lightly. The lack of communication and opinion has completely thrown out our rights to democracy. To give us 24hrs notice on a tiny note at the shop, hoping no one would notice. You should be ashamed of yourself, you were elected by the people of this island trusting you with the responsibility and well being our our land.
