Please ask the social media company that operates the Nextdoor app to stop allowing its members to post vulnerable pets for rehoming on this very public platform. Pets are family members. There are no legal or ethical circumstances under which any other family members would be put up for adoption on a social media platform.

There are hundreds of rescue organizations whose mission it is to find loving homes for pets when their families can no longer care for them. Most rescues are qualified to make sure that these animals are up to date on their vaccinations and other medical needs. They also work hard to make sure that animals are going to safe and caring homes. Nextdoor could offer a valuable public service by providing links to rescue organization sites rather than allowing individuals to post family pets for rehoming.

The purpose of Nextdoor is to provide maintenance referrals, get the word out about criminal  activity, find lost pets, look for buyers for used household goods, and other practical day to day necessities. It is an excellent  app for disseminating useful information. However, It is beyond the scope and expertise of Nextdoor to be involved in finding homes for living beings. In addition it puts vulnerable animals at risk when they could be cared for by organizations that are dedicated to their safety and well being. It is time for Nextdoor to stop this risky and potentially inhumane and dangerous practice.
