The Issue

As a lifelong resident of Spokane, Washington, I have watched our city struggle with deteriorating road conditions for far too long. Potholes and crumbling infrastructure plague our streets and highways, making daily commutes not only uncomfortable but hazardous. It is frustrating to see our tax dollars pouring into programs that, though noble in intention, have shown minimal progress in resolving homelessness, while the roads continue to fall into disrepair.

The situation is dire: according to a 2022 assessment by the Spokane Regional Transportation Council, over 40% of roads in Spokane are in poor or very poor condition. This is not just a matter of inconvenience; poor road conditions damage vehicles, increase traffic congestion, and pose serious safety risks for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. The American Society of Civil Engineers released a report in 2023 that estimated the cost of continued neglect of our roads could soar into the billions if not addressed soon.

Meanwhile, funding for homelessness initiatives in Spokane has skyrocketed, yet homelessness continues to grow at an alarming rate. A joint survey by the City of Spokane and local shelters noted a 15% increase in homelessness in 2023, despite substantial financial investments.

It's time to take pragmatism into account and reallocate funds to where they might have the most impact. Prioritizing road repair does not mean abandoning social responsibility. Instead, we propose a balanced approach. By redirecting a portion of the funds currently allocated for homeless programs, we can address two issues by improving road conditions, which would facilitate economic growth and provide better access to jobs and services - potentially aiding the homeless population in the long run.

I appeal to the Spokane City Council to consider this reallocation of resources for the betterment of all Spokane residents. Our city's infrastructure needs immediate attention and with smart management, it is possible to strengthen our roads without ignoring our community's vulnerable populations.

Sign this petition if you believe in a solution that benefits everyone and want to see Spokane's roads finally receive the necessary attention they deserve.
