As a passionate advocate for public transportation, I have witnessed the mismanagement of Class I freight railroads in the United States. These railroads are run by individuals who lack a fundamental understanding of train operations. Instead of investing in infrastructure upgrades, they choose to downgrade it. Moreover, these corporations often resort to cost-cutting measures such as laying off crews and imposing unreasonable working hours on their employees with minimal time off.

Case in point, I'm sure everyone by now knows about the massive Norfolk Southern train derailment in Ohio that happened in February of 2023. This derailment occurred because of mismanagement and cutting corners as well as irresponsibility on Norfolk Southern's part. As I am typing this, it is almost 2024 and residents are still affected by the aftermath.

The current state of our rail system is not just inefficient; it's dangerous and unsustainable. It's time we shift our focus towards passenger rail and public transportation - modes that can provide safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly alternatives for millions of Americans every day.

According to the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), public transportation is a $71 billion industry that employs more than 430,000 people. More importantly, every dollar invested in public transportation generates approximately $4 in economic returns (APTA). Yet despite these benefits, our government continues to prioritize freight over passenger transport. But as I have mentioned in a previous petition, it doesn't need to be profitable. It needs to serve people.
