Redesign SS2 Playgrounds for Toddlers' Safety and Imagination
The Issue
My kids have loved the pirate themed playground at SS2 since the day we brought them home from the hospital. It sparked their imaginations in ways I never thought possible, which has been instrumental for their development. Every day, countless toddlers like mine should benefit from such imaginative and safe environments where they can thrive. Instead, these valuable playgrounds are being replaced by obstacle courses that are neither age-appropriate nor safe for our young ones. I've shared my concerns with fellow parents and there's universal outrage. Parents are disappointed by these unsuitable installations – obstacle courses that remain underused and present significant safety risks to our young explorers.
It's heartbreaking to witness our children’s favorite play spaces being taken away. What's even more disheartening is seeing the impact this has on the daily lives of stay-at-home moms and caregivers who count on these playgrounds to provide safe outdoor environments for children five and under. Traditional, classic themed playgrounds like castles, space ships, and yes, even pirate ships, inspire imaginary play that is crucial for childhood development.
Our community playgrounds should be redesigned with the needs and safety of children aged five and under at the forefront. Traditional themed playgrounds encourage imaginative play and create a safe space where children can grow. Modern replacement should include bucket swings, big kid swings, stairs, and large walking platforms designed especially for our littlest ones learning to walk. A splash pad area should also be included to offer relief and fun, particularly during warmer months.
Moreover, large shade structures should be included to protect our children from the harsh sun as they play throughout the day. By incorporating such elements, we not only ensure safety but also promote an active lifestyle from a very young age.
Join me in asking the San Diego Liberty Military Housing planners and community leaders in Silver Strand Housing, Coronado, CA to rethink the design of our playgrounds. Let's advocate for play spaces that focus on safety and foster imaginative play. We urge the city to listen to the community's concerns and prioritize the needs of our youngest residents.
