Redesign plans for a replacement footbridge to avoid the felling of mature trees

Redesign plans for a replacement footbridge to avoid the felling of mature trees
The Issue
Jelson plan to remove five established trees (two of which are mature), as well as crown a sixth 40ft mature tree. Planning permission for a construction of a replacement footbridge was obtained back in 2013, however the trees were marked for retention under the accepted landscape plan (Charnwood Borough Council have asked Jelson submit new plans for the removal of the trees). We are supportive of an accessible footpath, however we are petitioning Jelson and Charnwood Borough Council to redesign plans so the bridge can be built without the destruction of the trees. Although Jelson claim they will plant new trees to replace the felled ones, mature trees absorb more CO2 than newly planted ones and will not provide an adequate replacement habitat for our rapidly declining wildlife. The destruction of trees would take place in nesting season (Feb-Aug). Residents living near the brook are already experiencing increased flooding, and removal of trees increases the risk of further damage to property. Further details relating to the concerns can be foundhere: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wIJ7unHwT9WycAqBXhW5nOiQ8DMfxBzTsJXaHqBmsL8/edit
