The Issue

I am a resident of Church Road in Caldicot, and I have increasingly grown concerned about the recent design changes imposed by the Monmouthshire County Council. These changes have not only altered the landscape of our beloved community but have also created potential safety hazards, particularly for children attending the nearby schools and those who use this road daily.

The current design makes navigating Church Road perilous, as traffic flows have altered unexpectedly and vehicles sometimes mount the pavements pushing pedestrians dangerously close to vehicles. The county council’s design does not reflect the needs of our community or consider the safety of its youngest members. Studies have shown that poorly designed roads can increase accidents and pedestrian injuries, especially when children are involved.

Moreover, the planters installed as part of the redesign have been neglected. Lack of maintenance has turned potential beautification into an eyesore, with overgrown plants obstructing views and creating additional hazards for cars and pedestrians.

What we ask is simple: a redesign that prioritizes both resident and pedestrian safety while respecting the aesthetic and functional desires of the community. We propose working collaboratively with the county council to reconsider the current design, incorporate feedback from local residents, and maintain the existing planters to enhance the community’s overall look and feel.

Our goal is to ensure that Church Road becomes a safe and pleasant environment for all—children walking to school, community members commuting to work, and families taking leisurely strolls. Let's come together to ask for a thorough review and redevelopment plan that addresses these serious concerns.

Please join me in signing this petition to urge the Monmouthshire County Council to take immediate action to protect our community.
