RED'S DEAD, BABY

RED'S DEAD, BABY
The issue
Did you know that approximately 70,000 to 100,000 cochineal insects are crushed to produce just HALF A KILO of red food colourant, otherwise known as carmine, cochineal, crimson lake, C.I. 75470, 120, E120 or Natural Red 4 – a colour you can get from heaps of other sources? In case you missed that, here it is again: between 22 billion and 89 billion adult female cochineals are killed per year to produce this dye. And did you know it’s often marketed as ‘natural’ so it sounds more appealing, even though it's a pretty bloodthirsty way of going about making something look pretty in pink(ish)? So please sign our petition – once we have enough signatures, we will use it to politely ask food manufacturer Arnott's to stop using E120 in their bestselling TimTams biscuits (this omission in ingredients is unlikely to change the quality of TimTams but will make a huge difference to billions upon billions of little lives).
