Beste rector magnificus van de Universiteit Utrecht,

Afgelopen maandag werd bekend dat de Universiteit Utrecht voornemens is de Bachelor Keltische Talen en Culturen op te heffen. Wij roepen op om deze unieke bachelor te behouden voor het Nederlandse en internationale universitaire landschap en de talige diversiteit van de Universiteit Utrecht te waarborgen.

De Keltische talen en culturen vormen een onlosmakelijk onderdeel van ons Nederlands erfgoed: van de altaarstukken van de Keltische Godin Nehalennia, veelvuldig gevonden in Zeeland, tot leenwoorden en plaatsnamen die we tot op de dag vandaag nog in het Nederlands gebruiken, zoals ambacht en Nijmegen.

Daarnaast spelen de Keltische talen en culturen in ons moderne Europa nog steeds een prominente rol als het gaat om politieke identiteit en culturele uitingen in literatuur, film en muziek. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan de onafhankelijkheidsbeweging in Schotland en de officiële status van het Iers als Europese werktaal. Culturele successen zoals de recente Ierstalige films An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) en Kneecap, winnaars van verschillende prestigieuze filmprijzen, het miljoenensucces van de Ierstalige zanger Hozier, en de succesvolle taalrevitalisatie in Wales laten zien hoezeer deze talen deel uitmaken van een bloeiende cultuur. Zelfs de middeleeuws literaire hoogtepunten van deze talen vinden hun weerklank nog steeds in immens populaire series zoals Game of Thrones, Merlin, Wheel of Time en ook Tolkiens Lord of the Rings.

De opleiding Keltische Talen en Culturen aan de Universiteit Utrecht is al sinds 1923 een internationaal gerespecteerd instituut op dit gebied en de enige bachelor van zijn soort in de Benelux. De opleiding heeft in de afgelopen 100 jaar vele succesvolle wetenschappers voortgebracht, zoals de befaamde Maartje Draak (Het Bureau, J. J. Voskuil), en levert enthousiaste alumni die doorstromen op de arbeidsmarkt in verschillende velden, waaronder de internationale wetenschap. Het Nederlandse Bachelorprogramma is één van de weinige bachelors wereldwijd waar de Keltische talen en culturen bestudeerd kunnen worden los van een recente nationale politieke context en is daardoor in staat vernieuwende wetenschappelijke perspectieven op het veld te werpen.

Om onze Nederlandse geschiedenis te goed kunnen begrijpen, en om succesvol te kunnen samenwerken binnen Europa, is het belangrijk om experts op te blijven leiden die deze talen beheersen en de culturele uitingen in deze talen kunnen contextualiseren.

Dear rector magnificus of Utrecht University,

Last Monday, the news broke that Utrecht University is planning to close the Bachelor Programme Celtic Languages and Culture. We call on you to preserve this unique bachelor programme at your university for the Dutch as well as the international university landscape and to guarantee the linguistic diversity of Utrecht University.

Celtic Languages and Cultures form an essential part of the Dutch cultural heritage: ranging from the important altar pieces dedicated to the Goddess Nehalennia, found so frequently in Zeeland, to the loan words and place names we still use today, such as ambacht and Nijmegen.

Additionally, the Celtic Languages still play an important role in contemporary Europe, when it comes to political identity and cultural expressions in literature, film, and music. We may see the independence movement in Scotland in this light, as well as recent box office successes such as the multi-award winning Irish-language films An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) and KNEECAP, the immensely popular singer-songwriter Hozier, and the successful language revitalization of Wales. Even the medieval literary highlights of these languages are reflected still in main-stream television series such as Game of Thrones, Merlin, Wheel of Time, and in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.

Celtic Studies at Utrecht University has been internationally respected since 1923 and is currently the only bachelor of its kind in Benelux. In the past century, it has brought forth many successful scholars, such as the (in)famous Maartje Draak (Het Bureau, J. J. Voskuil), and is providing enthousiastic alumni who move onto the job market in a wide variety of fields, among which international academic research. The Dutch programme is one of the few programmes in the world that provides for the study of Celtic cultures outside of the current Celtic regions, and it is therefore able to bring important new perspectives to the field.

In order to understand our Dutch history and in order to work together within Europe, it is important to continue producing experts who know these languages and can contextualise the cultural expressions in these languages.
