Every year, people in the Lake Tahoe area donate to Pet Network Humane Society in Incline Village, Nevada, trusting that their money goes toward food, veterinary care, and shelter for homeless dogs and cats. Now the organization's own board says as much as $2.5 million meant for that care may have quietly disappeared over several years.

The problem came to light almost by accident, after the board noticed something off with the shelter's tax-exempt status. Digging deeper, they say they found records that had been altered and financial activity that didn't add up. One staff member has since been let go, and the board believes this person acted alone. Pet Network says it's now pursuing both civil and criminal legal steps to try to get the missing money back.

Whatever the final number turns out to be, the harm is simple: money that was supposed to feed a hungry dog, treat a sick cat, or fund a rescue may have gone somewhere else entirely. The animals who depend on Pet Network can't demand answers for themselves — the community has to do it for them.

I'm calling on Pet Network Humane Society's Board of Directors to release a full, independent financial audit to the public, explain exactly how this went undetected for so long, and commit to real financial oversight going forward so donor money reaches the animals it's meant for.
