Reconsider the Ban on Menthol Cigarettes/Vapes in California

The Issue

To whom this may concern within the State Of California, I am writing to express my heartfelt concerns regarding the prohibition of menthol cigarettes and flavored nicotine products in California, as outlined in the recently enacted state legislation. This legislative action, while well-intentioned, has profound implications for consumer choice and public health that need immediate attention and reevaluation. As a consumer of menthol tobacco products, I have personally experienced a noticeable difference in health effects when compared to conventional tobacco products. The use of non-mentholated tobacco has aggravated my respiratory issues, leading to increased difficulty in breathing and a heightened risk of becoming winded during physical exertion. Additionally, I've observed a considerable change in the lingering odor associated with smoking non-mentholated products, which was not the case with mentholated tobacco. The prohibition of menthol cigarettes and flavored nicotine products raises significant concerns about consumer autonomy and civil liberties. In California, individuals who reach the age of 21 are legally authorized to purchase tobacco products under state law. However, this recent ban effectively limits consumer choice, restricting the ability of legal adults to make knowledgeable decisions about their preferred tobacco and nicotine products in accordance with adult consent laws. I understand that the Federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), along with various state enforcement agencies, strictly regulate the sale of tobacco products to minors. These regulations aim to curb underage access to tobacco, thereby addressing pivotal public health concerns. I advocate for a focus on enhancing enforcement measures targeting violations of these laws, thereby safeguarding the supply chain against minor access without infringing upon the rights of adult consumers. While I acknowledge the public health motivations driving the legislative action on menthol cigarettes and flavored nicotine products, I firmly assert that these objectives should not compromise adult consumer choice. I respectfully suggest a balanced approach that intensively fortifies existing laws against underage tobacco sales while upholding the autonomy of California residents in choosing their desired tobacco and vape products. Thank you for considering these concerns. I am hopeful for an engaging dialogue on potential solutions that honor both public health goals and consumer rights. I urge you to sign this petition and join me in advocating for a more equitable and considerate policy approach. Sign this petition to champion consumer choice and responsible regulation.
