Reconsider Ric Curtis's Return to John Jay College: Prioritize Safety and Justice
The Issue
Petition: Hold John Jay College Accountable for Protecting Its Community
We, the undersigned, express our deep concern and opposition to the recent decision allowing Professor Ric Curtis to return to John Jay College of Criminal Justice in the Fall of 2025. Curtis, who was implicated in a 2018 scandal involving drug distribution and inappropriate sexual conduct with students, was initially placed on paid leave, with the college seeking his termination. Despite evidence of misconduct, an arbitrator has ruled that Curtis will return to the classroom after only a year-long unpaid suspension.
According to multiple reports, Curtis was found to have engaged in "reckless and risky" behavior, distributing drugs such as heroin and marijuana to students and using misogynistic language. These actions violated CUNY policies, as confirmed by an internal investigation. Despite these findings, the arbitrator’s decision has allowed Curtis to resume teaching, raising serious concerns about the safety and well-being of the John Jay community.
This scandal, which has drawn significant media attention, involved other professors as well, who contributed to a "cesspool of sexism, misogyny, sexual harassment, and illegal drug use" on campus. While some professors involved retired or were not reappointed, the return of Curtis sends a dangerous message about accountability and the protection of students and faculty.
We call upon the administration of John Jay College, PSC-CUNY, and arbitrator James M. Darby to reconsider this decision and ensure that the campus remains a safe space for all. We demand transparency in the disciplinary process and stronger measures to prevent individuals with a history of misconduct from returning to teaching roles.
Sign this petition if you believe that our academic institutions should prioritize safety, respect, and justice over procedural technicalities.
