Reconsider Principal and Assistant Principal Reassignments in Anne Arundel County, MD

Reconsider Principal and Assistant Principal Reassignments in Anne Arundel County, MD
The Issue
The exceptionally talented and dedicated principals and assistant principals in our Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) have spent years building strong relationships with the student body, faculty/staff, and families, and at each of their schools. Removing these leaders from their respective schools would be a devastating loss to their school communities and would jeopardize the stability of the environments of trust, support, and academic excellence that are so critical to the success of our children.
Research shows that stable leadership is key to school improvement (National Association of Secondary School Principals) and that changes in administration can not only disrupt the learning environment but also negatively impact student performance (Educational Leadership Journal). It is disheartening to know that changes have been made without significant research into the culture and internal organization of each school, and without a clear understanding of the administrators' current role within it. Instead of collaborating with administrators to determine what outside support they require to best help their students, they are instead reshuffling principals and assistant principals around the county, resulting in heartbroken students and destabilized learning environments.
Our principals and assistant principals have worked tirelessly to support AACPS students and families. They deserve the opportunity to continue their outstanding work and leadership without disruptive reassignments. We respectfully urge Superintendent Bedell and the Board of Education to strongly reconsider these reassignments for the well-being of our students and the greater community.
