Reconsider permanent pride mural in campus atrium
The Issue
The atrium of the Student Services Addition (SSA) is a cornerstone of our campus, a space that welcomes every student and forms a central hub for our community. Recently, a proposal was put forward to permanently paint a progress pride mural on one of its walls. It is essential to approach this initiative logically to ensure campus resources serve all members of our student body effectively. Our university prides itself on being one of the best Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics schools in the nation. As a premier STEM institution, our decisions should reflect practicality and a focus on the collective student experience rather than non-essential cosmetic displays.
Currently, the blank wall in the atrium serves as a neutral canvas. This space is available for various temporary displays, posters, and rotating artwork that can represent any facet of campus life. This versatility is what makes the wall truly inclusive, as it accommodates everyone and remains open for future use. By permanently painting this space with a specific flag, the university transforms a neutral area into one that caters exclusively to a specific demographic rather than the entire student body.
Furthermore, the campus is facing significant infrastructural challenges that demand our immediate attention and financial resources. Chief among these is the severe lack of parking. What kind of a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics school has people who cannot figure out how to park? The mathematics of the situation are straightforward: one parking lot with one hundred spaces trying to fit one thousand students is not going to be able to do it. Nearly every single day, students express frustration about parking availability. These infrastructural deficits affect every student on campus, rather than just the specific group advocating for this mural.
Financially, allocating funds toward painting a permanent wall is an unnecessary expenditure for a college campus, which should be fundamentally focused on learning and infrastructure. When the university spends a portion of its budget on various small, non-essential projects, it depletes the resources necessary to build critical infrastructure like a new parking lot. Instead of permanent installations, the university could host temporary exhibits for various student groups throughout the year, utilize funding to support student-led forums, and prioritize improving necessary campus facilities to ensure a highly functional environment.
We should focus on initiatives that are important to every student. We should not be spending extra capital when the broader student body is dealing with a chronic lack of basic infrastructure. Join me in petitioning our university leadership to reconsider this permanent painting project. Please sign this petition to advocate for a more practical, logical, and resource-conscious use of our SSA atrium space and university funds.
