The Issue

Growing up in Texas, I’ve always been proud of our rich blend of cultures and traditions. However, as students from diverse backgrounds, we sometimes encounter situations that make us feel out of place or not respected.

One such issue is the recent move to mandate the display of the Ten Commandments in public-school classrooms across Texas. While I deeply respect the values they represent, it's important to recognize that these values might not align with the personal beliefs of every student and their families. In Texas, where our students come from a myriad of cultural, religious, and nonreligious traditions, it's essential that our schools respect and honor this diversity.

According to the Pew Research Center, 32% of Americans identify as either non-religious or affiliated with religions other than Christianity. Texas' melting pot of beliefs should be embodied in our educational environment, promoting inclusivity rather than exclusion.

By mandating such displays, we risk alienating students who don't share these religious beliefs. Inclusive education is fundamental in preparing our students to thrive in a diverse society. Instead of mandatory displays, why not consider an inclusive approach that invites discussion about various beliefs and values?

We propose a curriculum development team to thoughtfully design an educational approach that acknowledges and celebrates diverse backgrounds. This team could include educators, community leaders, and representatives from different cultural and religious groups to ensure all voices are heard.

We call on Texas school officials to reconsider this mandate. Let’s prioritize a learning environment where every student feels respected, included, and valued.

Please lend your signature to this cause and help us advocate for equitable and inclusive educational policies across Texas schools.
