As a member of the upcoming October graduation cohort, I feel compelled to voice my concern about the proposed change in graduation attire, specifically the introduction of green hoods. Despite our previous petitions expressing dissatisfaction with this change, it seems we need to reiterate our stance and address this problem once again.

The new green hood, while perhaps well-intentioned as a symbol of institutional identity or sustainability, does not resonate with the majority of students set to graduate this October. The traditional academic hoods have a long-standing significance, often associated with specific fields of study, and changing this alters a cherished aspect of our academic rites of passage. More critically, the choice was made with little student consultation, leaving us feeling unheard.

Moreover, the pricing of these hoods is unjustifiably high, placing an unnecessary financial burden on students who are already grappling with significant educational expenses. Adding an extra cost for a mandatory piece of graduation attire, especially one that does not reflect our preferences, is not fair.

In lieu of these issues, we propose the following solutions: first, maintain the traditional hood colors for this year's graduating class, allowing future dialogues to shape attire modifications thoughtfully. Second, if changes are deemed necessary, initiate a transparent and inclusive decision-making process involving a representative student committee. Lastly, ensure that any changes made do not incur additional costs for students.

This is a crucial moment in our lives, and our graduation ceremony should be a reflection of our journey, not marred by decisions that do not take our voices into account.
