Hi All,
Yesterday I attended a meeting a Molineux to officially hand over the petition and have a discussion, in attendance we had Jez Moxey, Matt Grayson and Laurie Dalrymple from the club and alongside myself were two fellow supporters Ian and Ian. I can only speak from my view of the proceedings, others I'm sure may see some points in a different light.
We discussed many aspects around the Money Shop, the deal and also the club in general as the debate wore on.
I know that many had submitted questions but the club were not prepared to have a Q&A session, so unfortunately I had to park those to one side which was disappointing, later on the club did say that they'd take these questions either by email or through Fans Parliament. At the outset Matt recognised the size of the petition, and that even though not all are Wolves supporters that it didn't devalue the size of it, although before long there were a few comments I felt didn't quite match up with that view.
The club we're keen to point out that they did not receive a single complaint regarding the previous association with the Money Shop and the advertising in the corners and back row of the South Bank, the backdrop for our meeting. In response we tried to stress the significant difference between some small signage in the corners of the stand we sit in and that of being the club's main sponsor and appearing on our shirt, the true symbol of our club, I think we quickly established that there was difference in the end.
We raised the issue regarding the reputation of the Money Shop, on this there was a clear divide between the two parties, the club argued that it was reputable, that it was continuing to improve its reputation and that the partnership with the club was assisting in that, where as we put forward the outcome of the recent review by the FCA, along with other criticism which has plagued the company and the sector in general to counter this.
We asked the club how much the deal was worth although they could not disclosed this, although its something clubs do regularly announce, as West Brom have with their sponsorship deal. We then mentioned the reported figure of £400,000 per year, they did not confirm or deny this, it was quite a muted response so I will allow you to draw your own conclusions on that. The club stated that there were many other considerations when choosing the sponsorship and that it isn't simply the case of who offers the most money. We were also told that it is difficult to attract sponsors and there isn't necessarily a queue of potential sponsors.
We also brought up an issue with the recently announced measure regarding the sponsorship being optional on children's shirts, the problem here being that children's sizes usually don't fit most minors after a certain age, Ian gave his son as an example who wouldn't be able to fit into a children's size. The club seemed content with its measure which is limited to just children's sizes and that this was not a legal requirement unlike with other area's such as gambling companies. Personally I felt there was a missed opportunity by the club here to a couple of problems supporters have voiced over the deal, the minors who don't fit into children's sizes but also adults who simply do not wish to support the Money Shop either and that they could have, as a compromise, looked into expanding this to all shirts, I have since mentioned this to Matt and this is something they won't consider.
We discussed the anticipated backlash from the deal citing the examples at other clubs, the club did expect some backlash, which was followed up with why take the risk regarding the relationship with the supporters that the club had been rebuilding, I can't recall us getting to straight answer to this to be honest and I think it was left that we felt this had undone a lot of the good work.
Following this we moved on to discussing the club in general and our views on the relationship between us and the club, they we proud of the fact that they could sit down with supporters as we were and that's not something that happens at other clubs, I can't comment on other clubs, but I would agree that yes, they we willing to meet us, they heard us, but on reflection I'll hold off on saying that they listened to us. I'm pleased that the club did meet us and that Jez did attend but I felt as though the club thought too highly of this, we too had spared this time and Ian and Ian both did so at extremely short notice, so I'd like to equally say thanks to all who spared their time.
On the club-supporter relationship Ian suggested that they need to be more realistic with us as supporters, and whilst I agreed with Ian, Jez said that he is often misinterpreted either in the media or online, from our side we suggested that they should challenge that then, whether they take that point on board we'll have to see.
Whilst discussing this we brought up Mr. McKnight, who appeared at a recent Fans Parliament and suggested that we should be more community focused like Athletic Bilbao, and whether the Money Shop fitted into that, the club then explained that this was simply McKnight's views not the club's. I then explained that with him being commissioned by the club, given a platform by the club, and speaking to the supporters at an event where the supporters speak with the club that this was likely to be interpreted by us as though he is speaking on behalf of the club.
We did say that we were proud and pleased with the work the club has done with the community and the number of local players we have in the team and its something we are proud of, the club were pleased and said that they rarely hear this. Although we question how this sponsorship fits in with this.
We also questioned how the deal with a payday loan company fits in with the clubs approach of being self sustaining and living within its means, Jez said that this approach comes from Steve and he has always stated the approach from the moment he took over the club.
We spoke at length, for over an hour, and covered various different points, some I can't really share unfortunately, this hasn't come from censoring from the club btw, its just points that we're said in the context of a private room.
One other point that cropped up a few times was the need for us all the be pulling in the same direction and that we are all in it together, which I entirely agree with, but again really does not fit with the decision of the Money Shop and the likely fallout.
On that last point, I did feel disappointed when reflecting back on the discussion, we did have a discussion and share our issues with the club but as you may have picked up on when reading through, there was very little resolutions and potential compromises which usually have to be made when you want everyone pulling in the same direction and are all in it together. I walked in hoping that it would be more than a token PR exercise, given that we'd all put aside a couple of hours of our day and that surely for both parties it'd be best to look to resolve the issues as best as possible, but looking back I am not so sure if it was.
I've spoken with the club since the meeting with my thoughts and they seem happy with the measures they made, which I personally feel did not go anywhere near enough and that's a view I believe many others share, and that they are unwilling to consider any more. They said that they have spent a lot of time speaking to supporters, MP's and other local politicians regarding this and that most suggested the new measures and were content with them, that's not something I would agree with from a considerable number who've contacted me, the comments left on the petition which I would urge the club to read again if they believe they've done enough and from other engagement points such as the forum.
Personally I am really disappointed with the club unwilling to even consider additional measures at this stage and I'm sure many others will be too.
Thank you all for your support and we'll begin to discuss the next steps, there are already talks of an alternative shirt, there is potential for organising protests and boycotts as well as several other ideas various people have suggested for what we do next.
Tom.
