Reconsider Doorman at Algonquin Regional High School
The Issue
Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough, Massachusetts hosts more than 1,200 students. Going into the 2026-2027 school year, administration has decided to crack down on personal devices and phone usage in classrooms. The app they chose to use, entitled Doorman, has proven to be underdeveloped and a possible safety hazard.
Doorman requires students to scan into class, turning phones black during the period and limiting access to other apps. Every review of Doorman reports the same problems: it is a mess of an app that is not ready to be used in schools and completely unreliable. Accounts from parents and students alike show that the app has gotten directly in the way during emergencies and is a huge safety concern for all parties.
Algonquin, alongside using Doorman, also plans to limit students from using personal devices — including any sort of computer that is not a school issued Chromebook. Chromebooks are heavily monitored and programmed to only allow certain actions. With this additional fact, the safety concern worsens as students will be unable to contact outsiders in other ways if something were to arise.
Many students have already voiced their intent to boycott the implementation of the app by not bringing phones or not downloading Doorman. This would mark all boycotting students absent from their classes. Rather than use an app that both students and parents alike have reluctance to use, we propose that the administration focus on individual problems rather than possibly hindering the education of all students and jeopardizing their futures.
Technology is an integral part of modern times and if students are not taught to mange how they use technology on their own then they will be unprepared for a working environment.
High schoolers are not children, they’re young adults. They are able to think on their own, work on their own, many pay taxes, have a car, take care of their family. Students should be able to make their own decisions and if they happen to be the wrong ones, then that can be dealt with individually.
Doorman may be a solution to a problem, but it is not the solution to our problem. By signing this petition, you help our voices be heard and our concerns be raised.
