Reconsider 34th Street Buses-Only Plan in NYC

The Issue

I am a resident of Murray Hill, Manhattan, and I am deeply concerned about the proposal to transform 34th Street into a buses-only thoroughfare. This change would divert car traffic, particularly those entering and leaving the Lincoln Tunnel and the Queens-Midtown Tunnel, onto our already congested residential side streets. The impact on the residential quality of life in our neighborhood could be irreparable.

The safety and tranquility of Murray Hill are at stake. Side streets that are quiet and suitable for children, pedestrians, and cyclists would become unsafe, filled with constant traffic. Imagine the noise, pollution, and potential accidents that could result from this shift. Our neighborhood, like many others in Manhattan, is a place where residents walk their dogs, children play outside, and people leisurely stroll to get a break from their hectic city lives. Increasing traffic on these streets could disrupt this balance and harm the community.

Moreover, local businesses might be adversely affected. With increased traffic on side streets, the ease of access and the customer-friendly atmosphere that local shops and restaurants currently enjoy might be disrupted. This could lead to a decline in foot traffic and, consequently, in business revenue, further impacting our neighborhood.

It is crucial to explore alternative solutions that balance the city's transit needs with the preservation of our community's character. Alternatives such as improving public transit options, creating dedicated lanes that still permit some car traffic, or implementing more thoughtful traffic patterns can be explored without transforming 34th Street into a buses-only corridor.

Residents of Murray Hill deserve to have their voices heard on this critical issue that will affect our daily lives and our environment. Ensuring a proper planning process that considers the needs and quality of life of all residents is essential.

Join me and many others in urging city officials and urban planners to reconsider or revise this plan with more inclusive solutions. Protect the essence of Murray Hill and ensure our streets remain safe and livable for everyone.
