Reconnect Park Lane Roundabout with Five bridges Roundabout

The Issue

I use the roads in Gateshead quite frequently, and since the demolition of the 1960s Gateshead Highway flyover, what used to be a simple five-minute journey now turns into a lengthy ordeal taking up to 45 minutes. This drastic increase in travel time is not just an inconvenience; it's turning the daily lives of local motorists, workers, and delivery drivers into a frustrating and seemingly endless battle with traffic bottlenecks.

The decision made by the Gateshead Council to remove the direct road corridor between the Park Lane roundabout and the Five Bridges (Bellevue) roundabout was aimed at creating more housing and focusing on greenery and urban development. While the intent behind this transformation is understood, the immediate outcome has been nothing short of chaotic, severely impacting those who depend on efficient and timely travel to sustain their livelihoods and deliver services on time.

According to a joint report from the Department for Transport and various urban planners, a well-maintained flow of traffic is crucial for the economic sustainability of any urban area. Without the Gateshead Highway, local businesses are already feeling the repercussions. Delivery delays not only inconvenience residents but also affect the local economy, causing loss of customers and revenue.

The original flyover served as a vital artery for the area, providing an efficient and direct route for commuters and goods transport. By reinstating the flyover or establishing an alternate solution that mirrors its effectiveness, we can restore order to Gateshead's crucial transport network while minimizing disruptions.

We propose a collaborative approach involving local transport experts, community developers, and the council itself to explore viable alternatives that can accommodate both rapid transports while preserving the council's vision for housing and greenery.

We appeal to the Gateshead Council to reconsider their current plan and work toward integrating a solution that balances urban development and traffic management.

Please sign this petition and join us in urging the Gateshead Council to take immediate and effective action to address this pressing issue. Your support is invaluable in bringing back efficiency and sanity to our daily commutes. Together, we can work towards reviving Gateshead's roads for both vehicular and pedestrian harmony.
