Petition to the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT)
Subject: Request for a Paved Switchback Path for Cyclists and Pedestrians to Connect Brays Bayou Trail with Wheeler Avenue

To Whom It May Concern:

We, the undersigned residents and members of the Houston community, are writing to respectfully request the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) to approve and construct a paved switchback path for cyclists and pedestrians. This path would provide a safe and direct connection between the Brays Bayou Trail and Wheeler Avenue, allowing users to safely access the Spur 5 frontage road briefly to cross to Wheeler Avenue and return to the trail system.

Currently, the designated detour for trail users from Brays Bayou to Wheeler Avenue and back is highly problematic and poses significant safety risks. The existing route—which directs users from the Brays Bayou Trail to Lidstone Bridge, then along Old Spanish Trail to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and finally back to the trail—is not only excessively long but also poorly signed and extremely dangerous.

A primary point of concern is the major crossing at Spur 5. This intersection is particularly hazardous, with high-speed traffic and inadequate infrastructure for the safe passage of non-motorized vehicles and pedestrians. The length and complexity of the current detour discourage the use of the Brays Bayou Trail for commuting and recreation, undermining the city's efforts to promote active transportation.

The construction of a well-designed, paved switchback path would immediately resolve these safety issues by providing a dedicated, separated route. This would:

Enhance Safety: Eliminate the need for dangerous crossings at high-volume intersections, particularly at Spur 5.
Improve Accessibility: Create a direct, logical, and safe link between two key parts of the city's trail network.
Promote Active Transportation: Encourage more people to use the trail for commuting, exercise, and leisure by making the route more convenient and secure.
We believe this project aligns with TXDOT's mission to provide safe, efficient, and reliable transportation options for all Texans. A paved switchback path is a cost-effective solution that would dramatically improve the safety and usability of a critical segment of Houston's trail system.

We urge you to consider this petition and allocate the necessary resources to make this vital infrastructure improvement a reality.

Thank you for your time and consideration of this important matter.

Sincerely,

The Concerned Citizens of Houston
