Recognizing Lineman as First Responders

Recognizing Lineman as First Responders
The Issue
I am requesting recognition of linemen as first responders, given the critical and dangerous role they play in disaster recovery. During storms and emergencies, linemen are some of the first on the scene, sent into the path of danger to sit by and wait for the storm to hit so they can immediately begin the essential work of restoring power.
These men are away from their families for unknown lengths of time, working long hours in hazardous conditions to ensure communities can recover and rebuild. Despite their sacrifices, linemen are not currently classified as first responders, meaning they are often excluded from the same recognition and benefits, including discounts and honors, that other emergency personnel receive.
Beyond storm work, linemen work tirelessly every day to maintain and restore the power systems that keep our homes, schools, and businesses running. Their hard work ensures the reliability of the services we all depend on, and they deserve to be recognized for the vital role they play in everyday life, as well as during disasters.
I believe it’s time to change that. Linemen are vital to disaster response and daily infrastructure, and they deserve to be recognized for their service.
I respectfully request that the state take action to recognize linemen as first responders, giving them the acknowledgment and benefits that reflect the dangers they face and the essential work they do.
Please sign this petition to show your support for the linemen who risk their lives to keep our communities running, both during emergencies and in the course of their daily work.
Sincerely,
Ashley Hawkins
