Recognize type 1 diabetes as a qualifying disability
The Issue
I am a type 1 diabetic, and this condition consumes my everyday life. From constant blood sugar monitoring to managing insulin levels, it often feels overwhelming. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is not just a condition; it is a disability that affects millions worldwide, and yet, in many areas, it remains unrecognized as such when it comes to qualifying for state disability checks.
Living with T1D requires relentless attention to detail to prevent dangerous complications. Every meal, every physical activity, and even sleep need to be meticulously planned. Despite diligent management, life-threatening episodes can occur, affecting quality of life and ability to work consistently, thereby hindering financial stability.
According to the International Diabetes Federation, approximately 1.1 million children and adolescents were living with T1D in 2019. The American Diabetes Association also highlights that T1D is a chronic condition requiring lifelong treatment and presents serious health implications, yet many governmental disability programs have not updated their policies to reflect the true impact of this disease.
Recognizing T1D as a disability for the purpose of state disability benefits would not only acknowledge the daily struggles encountered by those with this condition but also provide crucial financial support, allowing individuals to focus on managing their health without the added stress of financial burdens.
We propose that state governments reevaluate their definitions of disability to include type 1 diabetes. By updating these criteria, they would not only be reaching a fairer support system but also be improving public health outcomes, as financial support could cover essential medical supplies such as insulin, continuous glucose monitors, and pump therapy which are critical for effective disease management.
This change can start with your signature. Urge lawmakers to take action and help improve the lives of individuals living with T1D by signing this petition today. Let us push for a fairer system that truly reflects the realities of living with type 1 diabetes.
