Recognize the Republic of Somaliland as a Sovereign Nation

The Issue

Having been born and raised in Somaliland, I have personally witnessed the unwavering resilience and determination that characterize its people. Despite operating without international recognition, Somaliland has created a peaceful, democratic, and self-governing society from the ground up. I recall making my way to school past government buildings administered by Somaliland officials, casting my vote alongside family members in national elections, and feeling immense pride in our flag—a symbol of peace and unity.

Yet, despite our achievements, every encounter with international travel or institutions serves as a stark reminder of our lack of formal recognition. Since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, Somaliland has consistently demonstrated its commitment to democratic governance, stability, and economic growth. We maintain our own government institutions, military forces, justice system, and immigration controls. Elections in Somaliland are free, fair, and peaceful, setting a commendable example in a region often beset with turmoil.

The progress made by Somaliland is built on the strength of its people and the effectiveness of its governmental structures. The economy, albeit modest, is diverse and robust, benefiting from investments in agriculture, most notably livestock exports to the Gulf States, and burgeoning telecommunications industry. Despite these advancements, without official recognition, Somaliland is denied access to international financial systems and aid handled through governmental channels, significantly hampering its development prospects.

The time has come for the international community to acknowledge and embrace Somaliland as a legitimate and sovereign nation. By formally recognizing Somaliland, the global community can ensure that the aspirations of its people for peace, prosperity, and global cooperation are not unjustly sidelined. Doing so would not only validate the democratic values and stability Somaliland has displayed over the past three decades but also send a strong message of support for self-determined governance worldwide.

Sign this petition to urge the international community, including the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, and national governments around the world, to recognize the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state. Let us pave the way for a better future for the people of Somaliland and set a precedent for the recognition of other self-governed, stable regions seeking rightful recognition on the world stage.
