Recognize the Colorado River as a Living Ecosystem
Recognize the Colorado River as a Living Ecosystem
The Issue
The Colorado River is more than a water source. It is a living ecosystem that sustains communities, wildlife, agriculture, tribal cultures, and future generations throughout the American Southwest.
For too long, the river has been treated as a resource to be used rather than a living system to be protected. Pollution, contamination, habitat destruction, and activities that threaten the health of the river place at risk the people, plants, animals, and economies that depend on it.
We, the undersigned, call upon local leaders, tribal governments, community organizations, and elected officials to recognize the Colorado River as a living ecosystem deserving of meaningful protections. We support the development of policies and resolutions that acknowledge the river’s right to exist, flow, regenerate, and remain free from substantial pollution and environmental harm.
This petition is not about stopping progress. It is about ensuring that future generations inherit a healthy river capable of sustaining life as it has for thousands of years.
The Colorado River does not have a voice of its own. We believe it is our responsibility to speak on its behalf.
By signing this petition, you are affirming that the health of the Colorado River should be treated as a shared responsibility and that stronger protections should be pursued to preserve this vital ecosystem for generations to come.
Our goal is simple: Protect the Colorado River today so that it can continue to sustain life tomorrow.
“The river is not a resource separate from us. The river is part of us. When the river thrives, our communities thrive.”
