Masalahnya

Seafarers are not merely workers employed overseas. They are highly trained maritime professionals who operate under internationally recognized standards established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the STCW Convention, and the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006).

Every day, seafarers ensure the safe movement of global trade, protect human lives at sea, safeguard cargo worth billions of dollars, and contribute to the security and sustainability of the maritime industry. More than 80 percent of world trade by volume is transported by sea, making seafarers an indispensable pillar of the global economy.

In Indonesia, however, public perception and policy discussions often focus on seafarers primarily as migrant workers, while their professional identity as maritime specialists receives insufficient recognition. Although state protection remains essential, protection alone is not enough. Recognition of their professional status is equally important.

Indonesian seafarers undergo years of education, professional training, competency assessments, medical certification, and continuous compliance with international maritime regulations. They hold internationally recognized certificates and operate vessels in some of the world's most demanding environments. Their profession requires technical expertise, leadership, risk management, emergency response capability, and responsibility for the safety of people, property, and the marine environment.

We therefore call upon the Government of Indonesia, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), maritime administrations, shipping companies, and industry stakeholders to strengthen the recognition of seafarers as Maritime Professionals.

Our message is clear :

  • Seafarers deserve protection as workers, but recognition as professionals.
  • We are not defined by migration. We are defined by competence, professionalism, and responsibility.
  • Recognize Seafarers as Maritime Professionals.
