Recognize Punjabi as an official language of Jammu and Kashmir

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਨੂੰ ਜੰਮੂ ਅਤੇ ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰ ਦੀ ਅਧਿਕਾਰਤ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਜੋਂ ਮਾਨਤਾ ਦਿਓ।
As a proud resident of Jammu and Kashmir, I have witnessed the rich tapestry of cultures and languages that define our beautiful region. Among these diverse languages is Punjabi, a language that has long been spoken by communities in our region, and yet, it is not recognized as an official language. This petition is deeply personal to me; it symbolizes the recognition and preservation of our linguistic heritage for future generations.
Punjabi, spoken by lakhs of people in Jammu and Kashmir, plays a pivotal role in the cultural fabric of our society. It is not just a means of communication but a testament to our shared histories and traditions. Language is an essential aspect of identity, and when a language is sidelined, it risks being diminished. By making Punjabi an official language, we will be empowering communities to continue their traditions and celebrate a sense of belonging and identity.
The need for recognition is not based merely on cultural sentiment but on the practicalities and rights of the speakers. As of current reports, the Constitution of India recognizes languages spoken by significant populations, and it is essential for the stability and unity of a region that all linguistic groups feel represented. Recognizing Punjabi aligns with Articles 29 and 30 of the Indian Constitution, which ensure the rights of minorities to conserve their language and culture.
Moreover, official recognition will open doors for educational programs, media broadcasts, and government resources in Punjabi. This will significantly benefit Punjabi-speaking communities—enabling children to learn and communicate in their mother tongue and helping elders access government services without barriers.
We call on the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and the Government of India to recognize Punjabi as an official language. By doing so, they honor the cultural diversity and inclusive history of Jammu and Kashmir while fostering unity and understanding among its people.
