Recognize "Muslim" as an Ethnicity Category in the US Census

The Issue

In an increasingly diverse and multicultural America, the clarity of racial and ethnic classifications has become blurred. The current US Census criteria for determining ethnicity and race are narrow, often leaving individuals forced to choose categories that do not accurately represent their identity. More specifically, "Muslims" are not considered an ethnic group by the current criteria. Approximately 3.45 million Muslims live in the U.S, as of a 2017 Pew Research poll. This does not account for possible increases in the last few years. These Americans deserve an accurate representation of their identity in our country's key demographic documentation.

This is particularly relevant in melting-pot cities like Houston, TX, where various Muslim communities contribute greatly to the city's cultural landscape and should be recognized as such. Incorporating "Muslim" as an ethnic category would provide more detailed and accurate data about the makeup of our nation, which is essential for developing appropriate policies, programs, and services that meet the needs of all citizens.

However, there might be Constitutional implications to consider. Should such implications prove insurmountable or damaging to certain liberties, then there may be a valid argument for the abolition or substantial modification of the Census itself.

We must work to ensure that all identities are sufficiently represented in the Census, or question its very purpose and applicability. Please support this petition to either include "Muslim" as an ethnic category in the US Census or reconsider the future of the Census.
