The Issue

As a Jamaican of mixed African and West Indian heritage, I have personally experienced the discrimination and lack of recognition when it comes to indigenous rights. It is disheartening to witness the struggles faced by West Indian Seminoles, who have long been marginalized and denied their rightful place as indigenous peoples. Therefore, I am starting this petition to urge the United States government to recognize the indigenous rights of West Indian Seminoles and implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples into law.

The history of West Indian Seminoles is deeply intertwined with that of Native Americans in general. Descendants of African slaves who escaped from plantations in Florida during colonization, they sought refuge among Native American tribes such as the Seminole Nation. Additionally, up until 1715 when African slavery accelerated, a large portion of the captive population of the Americas was West Indian (which means the native peoples of ALL of the Americas as the term was originally used).  Over time, a unique culture emerged that blended African and Native American influences.

Despite their historical ties with Native Americans and their own distinct cultural identity, West Indian Seminoles continue to face numerous challenges in having their rights recognized. This includes issues related to travel restrictions imposed upon them due to insufficient recognition as indigenous peoples. Many individuals are unable to freely visit ancestral lands or participate in cultural events across tribal territories.

Furthermore, access to traditional medicines is limited for West Indian Seminoles due to legal constraints surrounding substances like cannabis, traditionally called "Ganja". These plants hold significant cultural value within indigenous communities for spiritual practices and healing purposes; however, current laws often prevent them from utilizing these traditional remedies.

Additionally, sacred burial spaces hold immense importance for any community's cultural preservation. Unfortunately, many sacred burial sites belonging to West Indian Seminole communities have been neglected or destroyed over time due to lack of recognition or protection.

To rectify these injustices and ensure equal treatment for all citizens within our nation's borders:

1) We call upon the United States government at all levels - federal, state, and local - to recognize the indigenous rights of West Indian Seminoles. This recognition should encompass their cultural heritage, ancestral lands, and self-determination.

2) We urge the United States government to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples into law. This international framework provides a comprehensive set of guidelines for respecting and protecting basic indigenous rights worldwide.

By signing this petition, we stand in solidarity with West Indian Seminoles and all indigenous peoples who deserve equal recognition and protection under the law. Let us work together towards a more inclusive society that values diversity, respects cultural heritage, and upholds justice for all.
