Recognize Functional Neurological Disorder as an Illness

Recognize Functional Neurological Disorder as an Illness
The Issue
After being diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), I found myself lost and unsupported. My neurologist, instead of offering continued care or guidance, simply directed me to a website and discharged me from his service. This diagnosis turned my world upside down, leaving me to navigate this unfamiliar condition without sufficient information, support, or financial assistance. The lack of recognition and resources for FND sufferers like me leaves us vulnerable, isolated, and often unable to access the necessary medical and psychological care.
Functional Neurological Disorder is a complex condition characterized by abnormal nervous system functioning. It can lead to a wide range of debilitating symptoms, including paralysis, seizures, and chronic pain, significantly impacting the lives of those affected. According to the nonprofit organization FND Hope, FND is the second most common diagnosis in neurology outpatient clinics, yet it remains poorly understood and underserved.
The lack of official recognition of FND as a legitimate illness by our parliament exacerbates these challenges. Patients are frequently stigmatized or dismissed as "hypochondriacs" by healthcare providers, employers, and even their families. This invalidation not only affects mental well-being but also hinders access to necessary financial aids and workplace accommodations that could facilitate management of the disorder.
It is imperative that our parliament takes measures to officially recognize FND as a disorder in its own right. By doing so, we can ensure better funding for research, educate healthcare professionals to properly diagnose and treat FND, and establish a system for financial support and workplace adjustment for sufferers.
Please sign this petition to urge the parliament to recognize FND as a serious illness and take the necessary steps to support those affected by this profound disorder. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of individuals suffering from FND and bring much-needed awareness, acceptance, and support to a condition that affects so many.
