Recognize and empower skilled migrant women in the UAE

Recognize and empower skilled migrant women in the UAE
The Issue
The United Arab Emirates is home to a diverse and talented workforce, yet many migrant women domestic workers are confined to roles that do not reflect their full potential or previous experiences. These women often possess valuable skills in IT, sales, cooking, driving, accounting, repair work, teaching, factory work, or managing small businesses. However, restrictive stereotypes, dependant visa statuses, and the inflexible kafala system prevent them from advancing or shifting into jobs better suited to their skills.
This petition seeks to advocate for the recognition of the skills of migrant women domestic workers and to provide safer and more attainable pathways for job changes. We urge relevant authorities to reform the kafala system, which ties workers’ visas to their employers, essentially restricting their freedom to switch jobs and forcing many to stay in roles that do not match their abilities or aspirations.
Statistics from the International Labour Organization indicate that migrant workers contribute significantly to the UAE's economy, yet their talents remain underutilized due to structural barriers. Across sectors, there is a critical need for skilled labor, and by recognizing the competencies of migrant women, the UAE can tap into this underutilized workforce, thus bolstering its economic growth. Countries that have embraced the valid contributions of skilled migrants have seen improvements in innovation and productivity, setting an example that the UAE can follow.
Implementing a more flexible visa policy will also help enhance workplace safety and satisfaction among these workers. By transitioning towards a system that allows for easier job mobility, the UAE can ensure that migrant workers are employed in positions that maximize their expertise and improve their quality of life. This reform could provide these workers with the empowerment they need to challenge restrictive norms and elevate their professional standing.
Join us in calling for immediate policy changes that reflect the dynamic skills of migrant women workers in the UAE. Let’s push for a reformed system where skills are recognized, mobility is possible, and every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
Sign this petition to stand in solidarity with migrant women in the UAE, supporting their right to leverage their abilities and pursue fulfilling careers.
