Coptic, the latest stage of the indigenous Egyptian language, is still spoken in churches and studied by scholars, musicians, and cultural activists. Yet today, artists face barriers when trying to release music in Coptic because streaming platforms and distributors; including Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal, Meta (Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram Music), YouTube Music, and distributors like DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby, RouteNote, and Ditto, do not officially support the language or its script.

اللغة القبطية، وهي أحدث مراحل اللغة المصرية الأصلية، لا تزال تُستخدم في الكنائس ويدرسها العلماء والموسيقيون والناشطون الثقافيون. ومع ذلك، يواجه الفنانون اليوم عقبات عند محاولة إصدار موسيقاهم باللغة القبطية، لأن منصات البث والموزعين، بما في ذلك سبوتيفاي، وآبل ميوزيك، ودييزر، وتيدال، وميتا (فيسبوك، وواتساب، وإنستغرام ميوزيك)، ويوتيوب ميوزيك، وموزعون مثل ديستروكيد، وتيونكور، وسي دي بيبي، وروت نوت، وديتو، لا يدعمون اللغة أو نصها رسميًا

This lack of recognition makes it difficult for people to share and find Coptic music, silencing a vital part of Egypt’s heritage and humanity’s story.

My name is Elu Emina, and I am a musician and writer passionate about Egyptian culture. For almost two years, I have studied Coptic. In 2023, I recorded a cover of Dua Lipa’s Dance the Night in Coptic. Although it could not be uploaded with a Coptic title or lyrics through DistroKid, it was warmly received by Egyptians and others worldwide.

اسمي أيلو إيمينا، وأنا موسيقية وكاتبة شغوفة بالثقافة المصرية. لقد درست اللغة القبطيّة لمدة قاربت العامين. في عام 2023، قمت بتسجيل نسخة غنائية لأغنية دو ليبا "Dance the Night" باللغة القبطية. على الرغم من أنه لم يكن من الممكن تحميلها بعنوان قبطي أو بكلمات قبطية عبر DistroKid، فقد لاقت استحسانًا كبيرًا من قبل المصريين وغيرهم حول العالم.

Now, I am ready to release original Coptic music. My single, an Egyptian pop track titled, “ⲥⲁⲧⲛⲓ ϧⲁⲙⲟⲩⲁⲥ (Satni Xamwas),” is fully produced and scheduled for October 31st, but it is on hold because these platforms do not support Coptic. Other songs are waiting too. It is frustrating to know that these services already support scripts far more complex than Coptic, such as Arabic and Thai, yet exclude Egypt’s ancient and still-living language.

الآن، أنا جاهز لإطلاق الموسيقى القبطية الأصلية. أغنيتي المنفردة، وهي أغنية بوب مصرية بعنوان «ⲥⲁⲧⲛⲓ ϧⲁⲙⲟⲩⲁⲥ (ساتني خامواس)»، مكتملة الإنتاج ومجدولة للإصدار في 31 أكتوبر، لكنها مؤجلة لأن هذه المنصات لا تدعم اللغة القبطية. وهناك أغاني أخرى تنتظر أيضًا. من المحبط معرفة أن هذه الخدمات تدعم بالفعل خطوطًا أكثر تعقيدًا من القبطية، مثل العربية والتايلاندية، ومع ذلك تستبعد لغة مصر القديمة والحية حتى الآن.

We call on global music streaming services, social media platforms, and distributors to add Coptic as a supported language and script. Doing so would empower Egyptian artistes, preserve this endangered cultural treasure, and give listeners worldwide the chance to connect with a living voice of ancient Egypt.

ندعو خدمات البث الموسيقي العالمية، ومنصات التواصل الاجتماعي، والموزعين لإضافة اللغة القبطيّة كلغة نص ودعمها. إن القيام بذلك من شأنه تمكين الفنانين المصريين، والحفاظ على هذه الكنز الثقافي المهدد بالانقراض، ومنح المستمعين حول العالم فرصة التواصل مع صوت حي من مصر القديمة.

Egypt’s heritage does not deserve to die. A single change in your systems could help revive a language spoken for thousands of years, a language belonging to a heritage which has given humanity so much through the course of history.
