Sorry for the delay in providing an update; my mother passed last month, so I've been somewhat off the grid, as well as working through closing out her affairs. I am still working with the Wethersfield Historical Society on recognizing Prince Mortimer's military service.
When I last spoke with the Wethersfield Historical Society, I was charged with obtaining additional documentation from the state on the life of Prince to help the Historical Society best tell his story.
I've done that additional research and found some very interesting facts!!!
- In the 1811 Superior Court Jacket for Prince Mortimer's case, he is referred to as "Prince Negro", not "Prince Mortimer". That makes sense since slave owners didn't commonly allow their slaves to take on their surname; that's something slaves did after they were freed.
I then researched "Prince Negro" and found two individuals from Connecticut that served in the Revolutionary War that were referred to by that name! They are referenced in the 2001 Book "Fire and Water" by Joseph Lee Boyle and also listed in "CT Men in the Military and Naval Services During the War of the Revolution 1775 - 1783". Both individuals are listed as serving from 1777 - 1783. Since it was common for most to enlist for 6 months to 3 years, the fact that both of these individuals served for 6 years may be an indicator that they were African American since it was more common for slaves to serve the duration of the war. This could be a promising lead!!! - I found an entry in the Connecticut Church Records State Library Index for Middletown Christ Church that indicates Prince had a mate and kids!!! This has never been referenced...not in the Richard Phelps 1860 book, nor in Denis Caron's 2006 book. The records indicate Prince was the father of three kids who were baptized on June 10th, 1803 (John, Samuel and Zilpah). This means I may be able to find descendants!!! The kids mother was also baptized that day (Ann). The record also seems to indicate another woman by the name of Ann was baptized that day and was the primary member of the Church. That would make sense, because in 1803, Prince would have been owned by George and Ann Starr.
More to come...stay tuned!!!!
