The area from Canterbury Jetty Road to just beyond Cain Road once formed part of a pastoral run known as ‘Tyrone’, established by the Cain family in 1842 and named after the Northern Irish county from which they had come.

Extending inland to Melbourne Road, the area now known colloquially as ‘Ryegowrie’ has forged its own unique identity, with the name ‘Tyrone’ used on several landmarks including Tyrone Foreshore Reserve and Tyrone Avenue.

With its picturesque sandy shoreline dotted with beach boxes and canopy walk under the ancient Moonah trees, to the quiet residential streets and the Moonah Waren Bushland Reserve, this coastal pocket possesses a distinct historical character separate from central Rye.

In recognition of this, we request the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council formally support a process under the Geographic Place Names Act 1998 to rename and define a specific section of Rye as the new locality of Tyrone Beach.

Formal recognition of Tyrone Beach as a locality will:

• Preserve Local Heritage by properly reflecting the 180-year historical connection to the 'Tyrone' run and indigenous Moonah trees.
• Improve Navigation & Safety by providing clearer geographic markers for residents, visitors, and emergency services in the foreshore area.
• Strengthen Community Identity by formally acknowledging the unique character of this residential and coastal precinct, which is already used extensively in local terminology.

Sign this petition to show your support for recognising Tyrone Beach as a locality on the Mornington Peninsula. Once the petition reaches at least 500 signatures it will be presented to Council.

Update 7 July 2026: Since reaching the initial target of 500 petition signatures in just three weeks, the campaign has now passed 1,000 verified signatures. A formal submission has been prepared for Mornington Peninsula Shire Council to consider.
