The Australian Census comes around every five years to provide a snapshot of who we are. This data informs crucial policies and decisions that have real-life impacts on the lives of Australians

As a trans woman, I'm not counted in our national statistics. I'm calling for federal legislative changes to include LGBTIQA+ data within the census, so that our communities are properly represented.

My communities have unique needs which are not being counted right now. LGBTQI+ folk often face higher mental health concerns and worrying rates of domestic violence. We are being excluded and discriminated against.

Despite widespread calls to include LGBTQIA+ data in the 2021 census, this change was dropped due to the conservative position of the Chief Statistician within the Australian Bureau of Statistics. No one person has the right to say that a group of people are invalid.

This is why I'm calling for legislative change in the Census and Statistics Act 1905, to legally mandate the inclusion of LGBTIQA+ data within the census. LGBTIQA+ people should not be overlooked for another five years. Please sign and share this petition if you believe our census should reflect the true diversity of Australia.
