Five days ago, our family was shattered by a heartbreaking incident. Little Blue, our beloved chawkie and my mum’s devoted companion for many years, was brutally mauled by an uncontrolled husky on our own driveway. This was not just an unfortunate accident—it was a preventable tragedy. The attacking dog, known for its aggressive behavior, was unsupervised, equipped with a long extended lead, and unrestrained by a muzzle. The horrific injuries Little Blue suffered in the attack were too severe for us to save him, leaving my mum devastated and inconsolable.

This senseless loss has ignited a mission to protect other families and their beloved pets from experiencing similar heartbreak. Across the UK, pets provide unconditional love, companionship, and even therapeutic benefits, especially for the elderly and those living alone. Yet, under current criminal law, family dogs are not recognized as companion animals, leaving their safety inadequately protected. This legal oversight fails to hold negligent pet owners accountable for the actions of their aggressive dogs.

Every year, countless companion animals are injured or killed due to negligence and lack of effective regulation, devastating families and communities. According to RSPCA reports, there were over 6,000 incidents of dog attacks on other animals in 2020 alone. Each of these cases represents not just a legal issue, but an emotional trauma that affects countless lives.

By recognizing family dogs as companion animals within the realm of criminal law, we can seek stronger legal protections and ensure that pet owners who fail to control their aggressive animals are held accountable. This recognition would not only deter negligent behavior but also improve community safety and promote responsible pet ownership.

We call upon Parliament to amend the Animal Welfare Act to include provisions that specifically address the rights of family dogs as companion animals. Such a legislative change could ensure stricter penalties for irresponsible owners and facilitate necessary measures to prevent further tragedies.

The reason I’ve specifically focused this petition on dogs is because it has come directly from what happened to my mum’s family dog, and the way the law currently treats the death of a dog when another dog attacks and kills them.

Dogs are family members to millions of people, and when a family dog is violently killed, the emotional trauma and impact on the family can be enormous. Yet legally, the dog can still be treated as property, which can mean the reality of what has happened isn’t properly reflected.

This petition is therefore about addressing that specific gap and starting a conversation about how the law recognises companion animals. It doesn’t mean I believe cats, birds or any other animals matter less. If this change can help open the door to better legal recognition and protection for other companion animals too, then I would absolutely welcome that. ❤️🐾
