The Issue

I, as someone who has personally battled with diabulimia for the past five years, am deeply concerned about the lack of recognition and resources available for this life-threatening disorder. Diabulimia is a dangerous combination of type 1 diabetes and an eating disorder, where individuals intentionally manipulate their insulin intake to control their weight. This petition aims to raise awareness and advocate for the inclusion of diabulimia as an official diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

Diabetes affects millions worldwide, with approximately 40% of females with type 1 diabetes exhibiting symptoms related to diabulimia. Shockingly, around 17% of males also struggle with this disorder. The mortality rate associated with diabetes alone stands at 2.5% annually, while anorexia nervosa carries a mortality rate of 6.5%. However, when it comes to diabulimia, studies have shown a staggering mortality rate of 34.8%.

The current absence of diabulimia from the DSM means that healthcare professionals often overlook or misdiagnose this condition. As a result, individuals suffering from diabulimia do not receive adequate treatment or support tailored specifically to their needs.

By officially recognizing diabulimia as a distinct disorder within the DSM, we can ensure that healthcare providers are educated about its existence and equipped to provide appropriate care. This recognition will lead to increased research funding dedicated specifically to understanding and treating this complex illness.

It is crucial that we address this issue promptly because every day without proper recognition translates into countless lives lost or forever impacted by physical complications arising from untreated diabulimia.

Therefore, I urge you all to sign this petition demanding that leading mental health organizations acknowledge and include "diabulimia" as an official diagnosis in the DSM. Together, we can make a difference and save lives.
